The new Monk Ascendancy, Martial Artist, is now a central point of attention for melee builds following the release of Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 Return of Ancients on May 29th.
In Patch 0.5.0 livestream preview, the development team showcased the unique design of this Ascendancy build, centered on Bell mechanic and enhanced Gloves, combined with – Whirling Assault skill, forming a build framework that balances map clearing efficiency with single-target burst damage.
The current version is still awaiting patch notes, but based on the revealed Ascendancy talent and skill synergy logic, this build already demonstrates high theoretical strength and operational depth. POECurrency.com will analyze Martial Artist’s core mechanics, resource rotation, and equipment selection based on existing information.
Core Mechanics
Martial Artist’s Ascendancy Passive Tree revolves around two core nodes: Bell passive summons and Gloves attribute reforging. These two mechanics together constitute the underlying logic of the build’s damage output.
Linkage Logic
Ascendancy starting node, Hollow Focus, allows characters to automatically spawn Small Bells in the scene every few seconds. These Bells can be destroyed in one hit and have a cullable tag.
The practical significance of this tag is that players can gain Power Charge and Frenzy Charge through the skills Killing Palm and Cull the Weak respectively, thus maintaining a constant ball buff during map clearing.
Charge Regulation aura skill further amplifies the effect of each ball: each Frenzy Charge increases attack speed, and each Power Charge provides a multiplicative calculated Critical chance.
Hollow Resonance is an upgraded version of Small Bells. When a player deals a Critical, Hollow Resonance attaches to the character’s back and periodically releases a shockwave.
This shockwave has a base attack damage coefficient of 341% and comes with a 150% multiplicative stun buildup bonus. By investing in Reduced Skill Effect Duration attribute, the interval between two Bell triggers can be shortened.
However, Bell’s own duration needs to be balanced to avoid losing output opportunities due to excessively short durations. Critical trigger mechanism dictates that this build must prioritize stacking Critical rate as a primary attribute.
Gloves Damage Conversion
Ascendancy mid-node rewrites the base type of equipped gloves. Gloves that originally provided flat damage and resistance affixes are converted into a global multiplicative factor providing extra damage and maximum resistances.
Being a multiplicative coefficient, Extra Damage works on all damage sources and offers a much more significant increase than a typical flat damage affix.
Your Gloves’ original resistances affix undergoes a split: one portion stays normal resistances, the other converts to Maximum Resistances. The result is a higher effective health pool cap for your character.
This node requires only two Ascendancy points to unlock, making it the primary target after the first trial. POECurrency.com specifically notes that this effect also applies to weapon attacks, not just unarmed attacks.
Resource Cycle
A heavy reliance on Whirling Assault’s combo generation ability defines Martial Artist’s resource cycle. This skill, tagged with Strike, accumulates combo points with each use, activating the conditions for releasing Mantra of Destruction.
Power Charge
The build incorporates two Power Charge acquisition paths to suit different stages.
The first path utilizes the cullability of Small Bell, directly acquiring Power Charge using Killing Palm, suitable for leveling and clearing maps.
The second path is suitable for late-game gear acquisition, leveraging Aylith Chimes gem to grant a chance to gain Power Charge when using combo-consuming skills.
After Whirling Assault accumulates combo points, it releases Mantra of Destruction, triggering the gem’s effect to generate Power Charge. Charge Regulation then automatically consumes these charges to maintain the buff. No matter the route you pick for generating Power Charges, a reliable stock of PoE2 Currency for sale guarantees easier gear swapping.
Skill Synergy
Power Charge serves a dual purpose in builds. Firstly, Charge Regulation converts each Power Charge into a critical chance multiplier. Combined with the staff weapon’s inherent 10% base critical chance and multiple critical clusters in Passive Tree, a consistently high critical coverage can be achieved.
Secondly, Charged Staff skill, consuming Power Charge, provides additional Lightning damage and ranged projectile attacks, further expanding Whirling Assault’s strike range and elemental damage composition.
Gear Selection
During the campaign phase, Hollow Palm Technique provides a weapon-free damage bonus. This skill provides attack speed and critical chance proportionally to the total Evasion and Energy Shield values of the character’s armor, gloves, and boots.
During the campaign, enemy strength is relatively low, and this mechanic’s benefit even surpasses that of most rare staves. However, in the later stages of Atlas Maps, as affix difficulty increases and high-critical staves become more obtainable, traditional weapon configurations will regain their advantage.
POECurrency.com recommends that a good late-game stave should possess four affixes simultaneously: Physical Percentage, Physical Flat Damage, Attack Speed, and Melee Skills Level. Prioritize survival attributes for prefixes on other equipment slots.
Choose an evasion base for the chest armor to synergize with Hollow Palm Technique. Prioritize flat damage and attack speed for gloves. Rings and amulets should supplement flat damage and resistances. Boots must have a movement speed affix. Belts and helmets should stack life and armor.
In terms of jewelry, Ruby Jewel is suitable for stacking melee damage and hit chance, while Emerald Jewel enhances staff attack speed and damage.
The burst potential of Martial Artist depends entirely on whether you can acquire the aforementioned key items as early as possible at the start of the league. Passive Tree
Near Monk’s starting area are multiple clusters of Critical Rate and Critical Damage. The largest Critical Cluster is located near Resonance node, providing Critical Rate, Critical Damage, and stun buildup bonuses.
The stun buildup stacks with the 150% multiplicative bonus from Hollow Resonance, allowing Whirling Assault to trigger stuns faster against high-health targets.
In Passive Tree, some nodes provide additional Critical damage after consuming Power Charge, forming a closed loop with Charge Regulation’s consumption mechanism.
Gameplay
The skill rotation in actual combat is divided into two modes: clearing maps and single-target attacks. When clearing maps, simply hold down Whirling Assault. Small Bells will automatically spawn, and Killing Palm Culls will generate Power Charge, maintaining the constant buff from Charge Regulation.
When facing rare or boss monsters, first use Whirling Assault to build up a combo. If you have Aylith Chimes support gem equipped, there is a chance to gain Power Charge when casting Mantra of Destruction. Then place Tempest Bell and attack it.
Tempest Bell’s damage reflection mechanism and Whirling Assault’s multi-hit strikes create a chain reaction, which can clear the boss’s stamina bar within seconds. If you have enough Power Charge, you can use Falling Thunder as a finishing blow.
Martial Artist addresses the problem of ball generation through Bell passive tree, and with the global damage increase from Gloves talent, it has the potential to become a mainstream melee build in PoE2 version 0.5.0.
